Our History

When It All Started in 1996

The Brewer High School National Alumni Association was founded in 1991, during the Brewer Mass Reunion.  It obtained its charitable status in early 1996 when the Brewerites met to officially organize the Association. The members who were at that meeting were Frank Gilbert, Willie Sussewell, Randolph Tompkins, Bernard Hill, Carolyn Simmons, Francis Wilson, Rev. Willie S. Harrison, Henry Brinson, Hosetta Williams, and Gerald Evans.

The legacy of the BHSNAA is to never forget Brewer High School and what it means to the students who graduated from BHS. This legacy that BHS instilled in its students is that each student would reach their potential to be the best at what they could be, as well as being productive citizens.

In 1997, the BHSNAA celebrated its first 5 honorees to be inducted in the Hall of Fame, and in 2005, the BHSNAA Scholarship program was organized. The first Scholarship recipients were Charles Fisher and Darren Jones. Each awardee received $ 1000 that was payable to the college of their choice. The scholarship has grown and continues to flourish today.  The BHSNAA has awarded more than 30 scholarships throughout the years. The alumnus continues to host fundraisers by having Chair Drive, Life Memberships, Selling Fish Dinners and more. A Book about Brewer High School was called,” Brewer More Than a School,” written by Dr. Robert E. Moore, Mrs. Wilhelmina Robinson, and Mrs. Edith S. Childs. Another fundraiser milestone that was created by Greenwood Council Woman with the BHSNAA was the 20th year’s anniversary with Hardback souvenir booklets that also helped fund the scholarship.

The BHSNAA Youth Choir was organized in 2015, and it consists of more than 30 youth and 6 adult volunteers. This choir was organized in memory of the prestigious choir that we had for many years at BHS.  These motivated youth are also descendants of Brewer High School alumni. The choir continues to grow and the alumni awareness becomes more active in the community today.

As the BHSNAA continues to recruit alumni and its decedents in 2018, it will continue to remain an ever growing source in the community in years to come with great leadership and legacy.
